Conditionals and Propositions in Semantics ⇤ Daniel Rothschild

چکیده
The project of giving an account of meaning in natural languages goes largely by assigning truth-conditional content to sentences. I will call the view that sentences have truth-conditional content propositionalism as it is common to identify the truth-conditional content of a sentence with the proposition it expresses. This content plays an important role in our explanations of the speech-acts, attitude ascriptions, and the meaning of sentences when they appear as parts of longer sentences. Much work in philosophy of language and linguistics semantics over the last half-century has aimed to characterize the truth-conditional content of di↵erent aspects of language.

متن کاملDo Indicative Conditionals Express Propositions?
In this paper I will focus on the question of what theoretical object we should use to represent the meaning of certain sentences. In particular, I will focus on the question of whether we should use propositions to represent the meaning of indicative conditionals. Before getting into this question I’ll try to locate it in the broader scheme of things. In recent years, the so-called semantic/pr...
متن کاملCapturing the relationship between conditionals and conditional probability with a trivalent semantics
Intuitively, it seems that both sentences are of the form: it’s likely that x, where, in the first case, x = Georgia will join the E.U. and, in the second case, x = if Russia needs foreign aid, Georgia will join the E.U.. Understanding how these ∗I am grateful to Chris Barker, Paul Égré, Linda Rothschild, James Shaw, Robbie Williams, and Seth Yalcin for pointing out some errors and giving helpf...
متن کاملTopological Semantics for Conditionals
In this paper we explore the topological semantics for conditional logic that arises from the Alexandroff equivalence between preorders and topological spaces. This clarifies the relation between the standard order semantics and premise semantics for conditionals. As an application we provide a construction of relative similarity orders between possible worlds from topologies of relevant propos...
متن کاملLifting conditionals to inquisitive semantics
This paper describes how any theory which assigns propositions to conditional sentences can be lifted to the setting of inquisitive semantics, where antecedents and consequents may be associated with multiple propositions. We show that the lifted account improves on the original account in two ways: first, it leads to a better analysis of disjunctive antecedents, which are treated as introducin...
